Keep the lock.
Change the key.
Rekeying adjusts a compatible cylinder so it operates with a different key. It can suit a move, an uncertain set of earlier copies or a change of authorized key holders. The lock needs to be suitable and in usable condition. Rekeying is a key-control change; it does not automatically fix a sticking door.
Build the request around doors, not a handful of keys
Count the cylinders you want included. A front door, side entrance and garage access door may each have a different arrangement. Decide which compatible doors should share a key and which should remain separate. Matching finishes do not prove matching keyways.
For a rental or business, establish who can authorize the change. A shared entrance may be controlled by someone other than the occupant of the unit. Explain any managed or restricted key system before assuming it can be changed as an ordinary cylinder.
When keeping the lock makes sense
Sound hardware may not need replacement solely because older copies are unaccounted for. Ask which cylinders can be rekeyed and which will remain unchanged. An old key can still operate a door that is outside the agreed scope, so keep the door list explicit.
If you want a different style, a different function or correction of damage, discuss that as a separate goal. Residential locksmith preparation covers household entrances; commercial preparation covers staff and shared-door questions.
When the original fault needs attention
A bolt that only seats when the door is lifted suggests a different concern from a missing key copy. A cylinder that binds with the door open deserves its own description. Say when the problem occurs rather than booking only a rekey and hoping it covers the fault.
The lock-repair page explains the observations worth mentioning. Do not file parts, enlarge the frame opening or force a worn key while deciding what to request. Suitability and condition determine whether rekeying, repair or replacement is appropriate.
A simple handover record
Confirm which new key works in each changed cylinder and how many copies were supplied. Test with the door open first, then check normal operation while someone maintains access. Record any doors still using earlier keys. Label sets clearly without attaching an address that identifies the property if a key is lost.
For a private rental near Stetson, agree the handover with the responsible landlord or manager. Campus-controlled doors follow their own process; this guide explains the distinction.
